WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Brunswick County is one of the fastest growing regions in the entire country, and some people who live there say it’s showing in all the wrong ways.
Many people who make up an Army of Volunteers say this isn’t how they imagined retirement.
Carol Miller retired to southeastern North Carolina from Wisconsin. She noticed right off the bat.
Work is set to begin this month on a $20 million community of rental cottages near Shallotte.
The development will cater to those looking to rent rather than own. The rental cottages aim to tap into a rental market that is rapidly growing . particularly among seniors, according to developer EYC Companies website.
This will be the first of many build-for-rent developments the company has planned for the Carolinas, according to a press release about the Heartsease development. The demand for rental housing continues throughout the entire Southeast, especially in the coastal North Carolina and South Carolina markets, wrote Sarah Nienhaus, a marketing assistant at EYC Companies, in an email to the StarNews.

Tifton Police Chief Steve Hyman said they received a call Friday morning, reporting Aguirre hadn’t shown up to work.
“It started out as a missing person and trying to determine if she was missing or whether she had just walked off. As we got more and more, and people started talking, we were able to determine more,” said Hyman. “We put out a BOLO on GCIC to surrounding agencies that she was missing.”
